Our Roles:
- Growth Catalyst
- Business Realization
- Pragmatic Innovation
The Challenge
PowerComp needed to integrate a new set of products and digital services into their existing operating capabilities and business model while assuring their team could operate the business once launched. The same capabilities and business model also had to be flexible to allow the launch of future consumer IoT products and services such as energy management, care and aging services.
The most challenging aspect was that the internal team needed to take on the management of the strategic roadmap to push PowerComp towards their goal. More difficult still, the team needed to do this while facing the “this is how we’ve always done it” trap. A mindset shift was in order.
The Solution
A Team² Approach For Identifying Opportunities, Engaging a Team and Launching a Business
We used our Team² approach to leverage PowerComp’s strong culture, business model and core operating capabilities. It’s through this approach that we use proven tools and processes to transform our clients’ cross-functional employees into a group of engaged start-up entrepreneurs.
Through a series of curated workshops designed to share information in interactive ways, we worked side-by-side with PowerComp to develop solutions and embed the process. As a result, we helped the company deliver sustainable results and business growth.
We began by designing and executing both customer and market research. With data in-hand, we created a decision-making framework for determining which business ideas would be pursued and developed and how. In a large group workshop that consisted of company executives and stakeholders, we selected and prioritized two options the company would move forward with.
We then dove deep into each option, developing applicable business models for each. Once PowerComp selected a business model that best fit their goals, we examined and defined each critical function within their new model. During small team workshops, organized by function, we focused on coaching each individual subgroup, assisting them with developing their necessary operating capabilities.
We then led PowerComp through their unique customer value proposition, product development and product/service testing, as well as their build, buy and ally process and helped them locate the right strategic partners.
In every stage, from strategy to execution, we followed our Team² framework (large group workshop, subgroup workshop and individual coaching), fortifying PowerComp’s teams while stimulating leadership development, change management and productivity.
By working closely with the entire organization, we engaged client team members, created a start-up mindset and fostered a commitment to succeed while ensuring the knowledge we gave was retained.
The Result
A New Consumer IoT and Smart Home Security Business That Increases Customer Engagement & Brand Relevance
As a result of our efforts, deep team engagement and the commitment of PowerComp, we enabled, drove and ensured client team participation from idea through final execution. PowerComp launched a new consumer IoT and smart home security business for much lower capital cost, faster than they believed possible.
Because of the accelerated knowledge transfer resulting from our Team² consulting approach, PowerComp’s team was able to go from little operating experience in a new business to managing a day-to-day business with minimal assistance from us within only three months of initial launch.
Additionally, PowerComp was able to achieve a 58%+ monthly services margin (before SG&A) at launch, regardless of operating scale and with the ability to improve margins to over 70% at scale. They were also able to stand up the business with less than $1 million in capital through third-party services, made possible by the team’s personal involvement in building the business.
PowerComp now has the ability to bundle and cross-sell existing services with a new set of highly demanded products and services. Via a new mobile app, the interface of the new business, PowerComp customers are exposed to a digital storefront, generating higher customer engagement and driving increased brand relevance.
